RESULTS:
The antibiotic concentrations were 3.4 +/- 0.6, 8.9 0.5, and 19.1 +/- 0.9 (±SEM) times higher (P less than 0.01) for children from the antibiotic naïve (n = 4) and antibiotic-treated 24) groups, respectively. Of the children treated with vancomycin, 4 (52%) had an improved titer versus 12 (33%) with placebo. The most common bacterial isolates recovered from the patients treated with vancomycin were Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, faecium, and Enterococcus fluorescens was recovered in 4 (42%) and no patients with vancomycin (P less than 0.05). The proportion of patients who developed symptoms after antibiotic administration was lower in the antibiotic-treated group (13% versus 30% in the n = 16 placebo-treated patients, P less than 0.05). Bacterial specimens were tested for resistance to vancomycin and clavulanate potassium; all isolates were resistant to vancomycin.
CONCLUSIONS:
Vancomycin is effective in the treatment of acute lower gastrointestinal tract (LGT) infections following antibiotic administration, and it is less effective when resistant strains are detected.

The trial of a Canadian man accused plotting to bomb a residential building and kill three people in Toronto earlier this year has been delayed.
Ahmad El-Khazzani, 38, is charged with three counts under the Criminal Code of Planning an Active Al-Qaeda Activity in Canada.
El-Khazzani has pleaded not guilty.
His lawyers have argued that the Crown has failed to present evidence that El-Khazzani plotted to kill Muslims in Canada before he was arrested.
